The independent alternative to ‘Black Friday’

Had enough of all the hype around ‘Black Friday’ and ‘Cyber Monday’? Fed up with the endless Christmas adverts on TV? Then you’ll be happy to learn there is another way.

Small Business Saturday, which returns on December 5, is all about family businesses, local shops, cafes and restaurants and friendly, personal service.

It falls in the middle of Melton’s Victorian Christmas weekend and thanks to Melton BID, Melton Council and the Town Estate there will be live entertainment, 100 market stalls and free parking on the day plus the added attractions of the Christmas tree festival at St Mary’s and the crib festival at Sage Cross.

Melton has a vibrant and growing independent retail sector which helps give the town centre an atmosphere and character all of its own. Money spent locally stays local which in turn strengthens the borough’s economy. And every returning or new customer will inspire local businesses to improve their offer still further.

I’m always struck by the wide variety of independents we have in Melton. King Street is a good example of this. On one side you have a snooker club, two cafes, antiques centre, music shop, cake maker, barbers, photography studio, church centre, gift shop, takeaway and butchers. On the other you have three hair and beauty salons, a tattooist, travel shop, art shop, bridal shop, florists, sports shop, toy shop, cinema, restaurant and a popular music pub.

At an independent there’s a direct link between the name above the door and the person behind the counter which means you should get the very best customer service. They will most likely also sell things you won’t see in the bigger chain stores and, unlike online, you can ‘try before you buy’.

They do promotions, too. For example, to mark Small Business Saturday Melton Sports will be offering 15% off all footwear.

Last year in the UK some 16.5 million people shopped in a small independent business on Small Business Saturday; the campaign attracted 3.5 million Facebook views and #SmallBizSatUK trended at number one all day.

So please do support, inspire and promote Melton’s small businesses this Saturday and beyond by choosing to shop local. Thank you.
