How to get into golf

Golf is a brilliant way to spend time outside, meet people, and try something new. If you’re after some fresh air, friendly competition or just a relaxing hobby, it’s easy to get started.

1. Start with the right mindset

Golf looks like a hard game to play, but don’t let that put you off… every player starts as a beginner. You’ll hit some bad shots (everyone does!), but you’ll also get that amazing feeling when you hit one just right and that’s what keeps golfers hooked, waiting for that next great shot.

2. Get some basic gear (you don’t have to break the bank)

You don’t need a full set of expensive clubs or fancy clothes to start.

Try this:-

  • Borrow or rent clubs at a driving range
  • Buy second-hand from social marketplaces, eBay or even charity shops
  • Start with just a few clubs – a half set is plenty for beginners, don’t make it too complicated.

Once you know you like the game, you can upgrade your equipment over time.

3. Visit a driving range

The driving range at Melton Mowbray Golf Club is a great place to start. It has a relaxed, social atmosphere, with no real dress code, and is beginner friendly for all ages. The main thing is to have fun, and don’t take practice too seriously.

4. Take a lesson or two

A couple of lessons with a PGA qualified coach will really help. They’ll show you the basics, grip, stance and swing, and stop bad habits before they form.

You can find coaches at most golf clubs or through the PGA website. Lessons usually cost around £30–£50, and many clubs offer group sessions for beginners.

5. Play a short course and keep learning

Before jumping onto a big 18-hole course, try a pitch and putt or Par 3 course, such as the Town Estate’s Asfordby Acres in Melton. The holes are shorter, the pace is slower, and it’s a great confidence builder.

The main thing is to make it fun and if you have children, take them along. Golf is a great social activity and great for business in the future. What’s better than spending four hours walking around discussing everything and anything while enjoying the great game of golf.
